This project had the aim to list potential methods to improve the properties of cellulose by either biochemical, chemical or mechanical modification of cellulose polymers. By improving the cellulose fibers, new functionalities could potentially be achieved that can improve the barrier properties or structural integrity of cellulose-based packaging materials. 41 approaches where found, of which 10 were outlined in further detail.
